This pretty picnic basket charm is well know in the Northeast as a Nantucket Basket. Coveted by collectors world wide, few craftspeople know how to weave them. Sadly, it has become literally a lost art form. In the days of the whaling ships, artist would hand engrave and carve the top plate, which would have been made of whale bone. Engravings on this plate were extensive and highly realistic. They depicted scenes of men harpooning the whale and the day to day struggle to survive in the waters off of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
